Ellie hits Vegas!!
December 2004
The trip was awesome - We hit lots of casinos - played a few slots - lost a few, won a few.  It seems like each one tries to outdo the other with opulence.  We did leave the glitz of "The Strip" to visit the Hoover Dam - talk about modern marvels,  Red Rock Canyon - I thought I was in an old western movie setting, the old Route 66 - I can't believe that people actually drove this road to cross the country.  It was scary., Oatman, Arizona which is a ghost town turned into a tourist attraction and where the wild burros roam the streets - mighty strange.  The Mojave Desert in Arizona was so different from the woodsy New England setting where we live.  There is so much to do and see that we have to go back.  I highly recommend it for those who have never been there.

P.S.  In the middle of photo 28, if you look carefully you can make out the narrow road which is Route 66 - there is a little u shaped cut out portion and a big drop - some of them were much worse than that - I was petrified and made Les drive about 5 mph - he laughed at me.  He traveled that route out to California in the 50's - hard to believe that was the only southern route before Interstates

If you've never been to Vegas, it's a must.  The scenery is breathtaking.   We went sightseeing and I kinda felt that I was in the middle of an old west cowboy  movie where they ride across the desert.

Quite different from the country setting of Connecticut.  We did Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, a ghost town, old west town, and most of the glitzy hotels on the strip.  Talk about ostentatious!

I think one of the highlights was a black jack table where the dealers were also entertainers who impersonate famous singers  - called themselves Dealertainers.  They all take turns getting up on a platform behind the table -- there was "Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Rod Stewart, Little Richard, The Blues Brothers".  They all looked and sounded like the real stuff.  It's a free show in the casino every day from 1-4 and 8-11p.m.  The Venetian had gondola rides with singing gondoliers, The Bellagio - one of the classiest hotels - had a wonderful fountain of lights show set to music every 1/2 hour after dark.   The fountains sway in time to the music.  Paris had a 50% scale of the Eiffel Tower - we went up in that and so on..  You could find something to do every day for a couple of weeks and not repeat.
