Magicat's Swap - April to June!

August 2005

WELL  - the rules were....

We all have some fabrics in our stashes that we absolutely hate or really have no clue what to do with...well, us pack ratters anyway.   So my idea was to send one quarter yard, fat or otherwise, of these unwanted fabrics to three participants and in return receive fat quarters from three participants ... the same three you sent to or not, depending on how many people play.

You then go back to your stash and chose three more fabrics to pull the three you received together.  Then make something with the 6 fabrics.... a wall hanging... approximately 24 inches before borders.

(You may use additional fabrics for borders.)
The only other rule is that you must use most of the swapped fabrics!!!

SOOOOOOO ....... the results are.....

Willo44 got her challenge together - and quilted!!! And was in the hospital too !!!  What a quilter!!!

The first swap fabric to arrive was a small scale red Christmas-y bear print from lostberrypicker.  Next came a large scale red rose fabric from Willo. Already I was thinking..what are the odds?  Two red fabrics!  So you can
imagine my glee when the 3rd fabric arrived...another in the red family!

This one a rich wine metallic from quiltcrazy.  This was going to be so easy!  From my stash, I chose a dark and a medium green to go with the leaves of the rose print, and a yellow as my background fabric.  I wanted to feature
the rose print, so I thought I would alternate Shoo-Fly and Snowball blocks.

But after drawing it out, the Snowball looked too boring, so I added a few lines and came up with a new block. (I'm sure this block already exists in some book and has a name, but I don't know what it is.)

The challenge for me was in joining the completed blocks together...all those quarter square triangle points to meet! I added the two borders after my trip to Wisconsin. The fabrics came from my mom's stash, as did the backing fabric.

The finished quilt is 35 x 35. I named it "Almost Christmas" for the one Christmas fabric that was used and for the fact that the quilt is in Christmas colors. But the roses make it an anytime quilt and you have to look very close to see the holly in the bear fabric. :-)

I had fun doing this and hope the others did too!

MC pulled colors from her and her mom's stashes.... see later on this page where we discuss the planning of quilts....

I did have fun with the challenge and hope I did it justice.

I received FQ's from Ty, Snips and quiltcrazy.  The Sky background fabric is from Ty, the side roof and binding of beige with small squares and dots was from Snips and the side of the building and  part of the checkerboard border was from quiltcrazy.

The huge challenge here was what to do with the sky background.  It needed to be a background somehow, so I chose the hillside village.

I did use ALL of the three colors I received.  Some is on the back but it is all there.  I even took some out of the trash for the back.

The quilt measures  25 X 30 and is named "Hillside Village by Moonlight"

I would love to do a challenge like this again.  And really none of the fabrics were ugly just challenging.

qD's Quilt....

Here is my story of my wonderful Challenge.

In the mail came Willo's FQ, a lovely pastel yellow with green, blue, violet floral, then along came Polly's FQ, a bright plaid in yellow, blue, red and green, and finally Dr. Beth's FQ arrived.  It was White with Green and Brown
trees.  So now I had to select a pattern and my FQ's.  I already had picked out the blue and red, but didn't know what to do.

One day I spend going through every single book, I own on quilting, trying and trying to get an idea, but nothing, then the next day I went through a drawer and a half of quilt magazines, still nothing, on the third day I continued thought the last half and another full drawer looking through magazine and VIOLA!, EUREKA!, there was the quilt that I would do, in the last magazine in the drawer.  I found the pattern in the McCall's Quilting Volume 11, No 1, February 2004, page 52 - 54.  It is called Garden Court by M'Liss Rae Hawley.

Now to the cutting board and start cutting and making the blocks, oh by the way the last FQ for my Challenge is White.  After putting the top together I began Customizing, Digitizing and Embroidery, My Garden Court Quilt.  I
machined embroidered this quilt for a total 8 hours for 4 full days, total time 32 hours, then I stippled quilted the entire quilt, again another 4 hours per day, total 8 hours.  The backing and binding are the same.

How much of the Challenge FQ's are left, see the photo, that is all that is left and also see the photos of my FQ's also all that is left.

I love this pattern and will be doing a couple more with some other embroidery designs on them,  one for a wedding and another for a baby. Thanks so much for doing this challenge, it was a real challenge for me,
especially when Dr. Beth's FQ came.  But through perseverance I conquered it.

Can't wait to see everyone's challenges.  We must do this again real soon.

Behind the scenes...... There is always a lot of planning that goes on behind the scenes of a quilt.  As I show my girlfriends what goes on in my quilting world, they are amazed at the amount of prep time, planning, fabric "auditioning" that is done before all the actual cutting begins. There is a group of us that gets together as friends - as we have raised our children together for the past 20+ years.  We have made a quilt together now, and have just started a second.  Although they are, for the most part, not quilters, they do appreciate the joy of the work together in the project.  qD sent along her "auditioning" notes for her quilt...as did Magicat!!

Fat quarters qD received...................                                                ......................and fat quarters qD used.

MC's challenge started with fabrics received... in red!!

      then, she added....

and pulled some from her mom's stash...
