Lecture 4: Carol Doak

January 22, 2007 - 5:30PM(PST), 6:30PM(MST), 7:30PM(CST) and 8:30PM(EST)... and 2:30 AM Tuesday in Holland!

 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The chatters started wandering into the chat site about 6 pm (half an hour early).  There was a lot of excitement as members and non-members chatted, introduced themselves and generally shared bits about themselves.  As the evening progressed, people came and went - more came than went!

Everyone received a number so that they could receive a door prize later on.

Then - on the stroke of 6:30 ....

 * Carol has joined #Fabric-Stash_Chat

<Carol>Yes, I made it here.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Okay Ladies, for questions please use ? and for comments please use !.  I will call on you when I see those items next to name

<Carol> I'm ready!

<ClaudiaND> Welcome Carol and I guess I should introduce myself to the group...I am the Pres of RPLOTN and I am just thrilled to see all of you here....Thank You for coming

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Okay Ladies may I introduce Carol Doak, I call her the Queen of Paper Piecing but she has lots to tell us this evening

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol the room is yours

<Needles> We welcome you Carol Doak

<Carol> Thanks!!!

<Carol>  Nice to see a super group. I'm ready to answer any questions you might have.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol - Can you give us a slight bio on how you started paper piecing

<Carol>  Most people find that being shown how to paper piece is the easiest way to get the hang of it in the beginning. It really isn't hard, it is just a system of steps to produce perfect patchwork.

<Needles> Is getting started at paper piecing hard?  I have never done it.

<Carol> As for a bio, gosh, I've been teaching quilting for 25 years but started to really get into paper piecing about 15 years ago. I love teaching this method to others because quilters of all levest can produce wonderfully accurate patchwork. My first pp book came out in 1993 and since then I've written about 10 books on the subject of paper piecing. The next one will be released in July!

<auntie-em> how will the next book differ from the others

<Carol> This method has also given me the opportunity to create lots of interesting and intricate quilt designs....more than 1000! What could be better?

<auntie-em> I have several of your books and love them all - will this have new stuff?

<Margie-ARK> do you still teach pp using the add a ruler and postcard?  I love it!

<Carol> The next book is called Mariner's Compass Stars. I've taken the intricate radiating qualities of a Mariner's Compass and transformed it into easy sections that can be joined to create blocks. This time each of the blocks will be named for countries and areas of the world  rather than states like in my previous two star books. I've taken some of these blocks in put them in a variety of quilt setting that showcase how just a few blocks and sections of blocks can create a dramatic impact. I'm excited about this one....Can you tell? It will also come  with the Foundation Factory to let you print your foundations from your computer.

<Carol> Yes, I still teach using the Add-A-Quarter and the famous postcard...lol

<qltnfool> when loading your 300 paper pieded cd, I could not get the bonus blocks.  What am i doing wrong?

<Carol> Qltn...you need to register the 300 PP Quilt Block to get the bonus blocks from QuiltPro

<qltnfool> I did and still did not get the bonus blocks!

<Carol> qltnfool, just email me directly at qcarol@aol.com after the chat and I will get in touch with QuiltPro for you to work it out.

<qltnfool> Thanks!

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol what is the purpose of the add a quarter?

<Carol> The purpose of the Add-A-Quarter is to trim the preceding fabric pieces exactly 1/4" and parallel from the seam line you will sew. This serves two purposes, the first is that you know exactly where to position the next piece of fabric and very important....the piece that you sew will open consistently parallel to the seam line. That way every piece only uses 1/4" of seam allowance and opens up exactly the same way after it is pressed open. Great tool!!!

<EllenB; Carol, we had to get a new computer the other broke.  Can I register the 300 PP Quilt block to get the bonus blocks or should I also e-mail you for QuiltPro

<Carol> Ellen, just email QuiltPro directly and explain the issue. I'm sure they will assist you.

<EllenB; okay, thanks

<Linda> Carol, do you think you will ever get down to VA anytime

<Carol> Linda, actually I've taught in VA in the past and do have at least one trip there booked for the future. Just keep checking my travel schedule on my web site.

<Linda> ok will do ty

<Linda> I have been trying to find the rubber stamps w/the quilt blocks on them but no luck. i did a forty eight 3" square signature wall hanging.

<Carol> Linda, I fear the rubber stamps are no longer made...haven't seen them for awhile. I believe the computer has taken over.

<piney> Which of your PP books do you recommend to start learning with? Do you use a light box?

<Carol> piney, actually you can start with any of them because they all have directions on how to paper piece.

<Carol> No, I don't use a light box. Just the light on my sewing machine.

<piney> TY

<Pat> ! Gotta go, kids bedtime. Nice to meet all of you and you Carol!

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> nite Pat

<tricia> Carol, it's great to have the cut measurements for the pieces of fabric.  Do you have a formula to increase the measurements for blocks larger than those in the book?

<Carol> Tricia: There is no formula, but rather a method for how to make measures. This method is described in all of my recent books.

<tricia> OK, will check it out. Thanks

<Cyd-TX> Carol -- What project would you suggest for your first pp try?

<Carol> Cyd, I would suggest a 4" block with 6 or fewer pieces. The smaller blocks are easier to handle and with only six pieces, you won't have much to think about.

<Cyd-TX> Would these be in your first book?

<Carol> Cyd, yes, you will find 4" blocks in my first book, Easy Machine Paper Piecing, but because this book was written prior to my giving the cutting measurements, there are no cutting measurements in this book. Therefore, I would suggest the newer 300 Paper Pieced Quilt Block book, because you will have a huge selection of 4" blocks and the cutting lists and the cd to print the foundations. This book will keep you in paper pieced block designs for years and years.

<Cyd-TX> ok, thank you.

<CaroleD> Carol's DVD is a great way for beginners to learn all her wonderful techniques.

<Carol> CaroleD, I agree, the new Carol Doak Teaches You to Paper Piece DVD is just like coming to my studio and taking a one on one class.

<auntie-em> carol - i have two questions

<auntie-em> do you press your seams open after you add each piece of fabric?

<Carol> Auntie, I don't press the seams open, but rather press the fabric open that I just sewed and yes, I do use an iron for this. It gives you a very crisp and accurate block.

<majikat> what is the tool you were just talking about? sorry i was late...

<Gail> Carol, what's the difference in the lessons on the DVD compared with the CD that comes with 50 Fabulous PP Stars?

<ClaudiaND> What is the name of the DVD?

<Carol> Gail, the CD that comes with the 50 Fabulous PP Stars book has about 15 minutes of paper piecing instruction that you can watch on your computer. The DVD runs about 90 minutes can be watched on your TV and/or computer and has much more information about paper piecing.

<Gail> Thank you.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> give carol a chance to catch up with questions

<auntie-em> ok - i installed the 300 pp blocks on my computer with foundation factory and there are 310 blocks - are those the 10 bonus blocks you were referring to?

<Carol> Auntie, yes there are 10 bonus blocks

<auntie-em> then i guess mine worked after all. ty

<Carol> Auntie, great!

<Linda> the CD that comes w/300 pp - can i put it in my dvd and watch it on tv?

<Carol> Linda, no the CD that comes with the 300 book and the CD that comes with my newest book, Simply Sensational 9-Patch Stars are the Foundation Factory computer program that lets you print your foundations from your computer.

<tricia> Carol, are the cutting measurements listed on the CD that accompanies the books?

<Carol> Tricia, no cutting measurements on the Foundation Factory CD that accompanies the 300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Block and the Simply Sensation

<auntie-em> the best thing about those CDs and I have the sensational stars one too - is that you can print them in any size you want.

<Carol> 9-Patch Star books. Those cutting lists are in those books.

<tricia> Thank you, Carol.

<Carol> Auntie...yes, that is another great feature.

<auntie-em> i just love that

<QC> when paper piecing I can never remember which side to put the fabric. Print side of the pattern or the other side.

<Carol> QC, the fabric always goes on the blank side of the paper and you sew on the lined side of the paper...You could always write the word fabric on the blank side of the paper just as a reminder....

<qltnfool> do you have a book that has Christmas ornaments

<Carol> qltnfool, the book Easy Paper-Pieced Keepsake Quilts had a group of Christmas patterns. Unfortunately that book is out of print. But the good news is that the designs from the book are still available on the Carol Doak Designer Edition of the Foundation Factory so they are still available.

<qltnfool> Thanks Carol

<tricia> What exactly is Foundation Factory?

<Carol> Great question Tricia, the Foundation Factory is a quilt program created by Quilt Pro Systems, that permits you to select a design and print it out. You have options like changing the size, printing multiple foundations to a page, flipping it, distorting etc.

<Carol> I entered into an agreement several years ago, to put my designs on a CD with their program. The first one was the Carol Doak Designer Edtion and it contains about 400 designs from my six earliest books. Then when I wrote the 50 Fabulous PP Star book and the 40 Bright & Bold book, we created separate companion CD's for each of those books that can be purchased separately. Now...drum roll, when they were finally able to create both the MAC and PC format for the Foundation Factory, we entered into an agreement to include them with the books. That is why the two latest books come with the Foundation Factory CD and the next book will also.

<Carol> whew!!!

<Sally-IL> I got several of your cds, but they are old ones have you come out with new ones?or have added to them?

<tricia> LOL!  Is FF compatible  with EQ5?

<Carol> No Tricia, two different design programs. It is compatible with the Quilt Pro Design program though.

<tricia> Thank you very much!

<Carol> You are most welcome tricia

<Carol> So....are we doing door prizes?

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> yes we are Carol

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> but Sally has a question, then quiltfool has one and quiltfan has one

<Sally-IL> QD I asked mine I think.

<Quiltfan> is there a trick to join the center parts of the stars correctly? mine are still always wrong

<Carol> Quiltfan, yes, pinning and basting as described in the book so they don't shift.

<Quiltfan> I did, but still it didn't work

<Carol> Quiltfan, pin from the outside in at each matching point or every 3", machine baste and check that they are a good match before sewing.

<Quiltfan> Thanks, I'll try that

<qltnfool> So will the foundation factory for the new book be the same as in the 9 patch

<Carol> qltnfool, yes, same program, just different designs.

<qltnfool> Thanks

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> are there anymore questions or comments

<piney> TY from NH for chatting with us

<JoAnn> Thanks QD.  Carol, any tips for those of us that have trouble thinking 'upside down and backwards?  That is how I feel when I attempt to PP a block!

<JoAnn> You can tell that I am truely a beginner at this

<Carol> JoAnn, yes I do!!!! When placing the fabrics that you are going to add, always look through the blank side of the block to the design on the other side. That way, you are seeing the design the way it will be completed and there is no reverse thinking.

<Carol> JoAnn....we were all beginners at one time so you are in good company.

<JoAnn> Thanks Carol ...... perhaps that and as you suggested earlier writing on the fabric side would help me

<JanetS> I think there's a lot that can be learned from the DVD and the price is less than a class!

<Carol> I agree Janet, I've received so many wonderful comments back about the DVD. I am really pleased with how it turned out and you get to replay back any portion you want as a refresher because it is broken into chapters.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol do you teach for Quilt University ?

<Carol> quilDonalyn, no, I don't teach at Quilt University . With traveling across the country with 40 trips a year, writing new books and making quilts just not any extra hours in the day to take on another venture.

<peaches> Carol, there are times that no matter what I do, I can seem to get the new space covered and I end up with a very small seam allowance.  Any sure fire way to prevent this, except for using 1/2 yard of fabric, that is?

<Carol> Peaches, that comes from how to measure and how to place. If you measure correctly (and there is a specific way to measure, it is not just how long and wide a piece is) and you place correctly, you will never have that issue. Re: placing, it is really a simple method of placing the fabric right side up on the blank side of the paper over the area it needs to fill. Then, flip it right sides together along the seam line you just trimmed with the Add-A-Quarter ruler. NOW....here is the trick, look at the ends of the piece you just flipped and follow those up and if the area you need to cover falls within the ends....well, you are golden!!!

<peaches> Awesome...thanks for help...get tired of ripping and tapeing...

<Quiltfan> Are you one day coming to Europe to teach a class? or sell your book personally?

<Carol> Quiltfan, I have taught in Europe in the past and really enjoyed it and although I don't have any trips on my schedule now for Europe , I could in the future.

<Quiltfan> Thanks I'll be waiting here patiently! Don't forget Holland !

<Sally-IL> Are you going to be at the international quilt show in Chicago ?

<Carol> Sally, no, I am not going to Chicago this year.

<Carol> Quiltfan...you could just invite me for a visit and I could come to Holland and play with you...lol

<Quiltfan> I remind that! First need to check the hotels here! It would be aewsome!

<<Smoky interjects - using her editing prerogative... "boy! if it's that easy - Carol!  Come to Edmonton !!!">>

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol what is the secret for the double sided tape? I have noticed that mentioned quite a bit on the Yahoo site

<Carol> quiltDonalyn, I don't use double-sided tape for paper piecing so other than being sticky on both sides, I don't know.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> okay guess I was reading it wrong

<Carol> You might be thinking of Scotch Brand Removable tape...I use that to repair foundations.

<JoAnn> I think I remember Carol mentioning removable tape ..... and I see she already mentioned that.

<qltnfool> Does the size of the needle really make a difference

<Carol> Yes, the size of the needle is important to make a larger hole to remove the paper easily and I am all for easy paper removal. I use a size 90/14 needle 18 to 20 stitches to the inch and my Foundation Paper and taking off the paper is a breeze

<qltnfool> Thanks I will try that size

<Linda> Carol, do you do live chats often,, this is so kewl !!

<Carol> Linda, I do them every 6 months or so...it is fun for me too...

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> Carol after making a quilt top with paper piecing how hard is it to do hand quilting and machine quilting?

<Carol> I am primarily a hand quilter so I just make sure to design my handquilting around the open areas and not in areas where there are lots of merging seams. I do machine quilt some of the smaller projects and it is not difficult at all. The quilting can add wonderful dimension and design accents to paper pieced projects.

<Quiltfan> how do i get rid of tiny the paper pieces left in crossed seams? or just leave it there?

<Carol> Quilfan, those tiny pieces just add to the warmth of quilt!!!!

<Linda> lol

<Quiltfan> no problem with washing the quilt then?

<Carol> Not at all.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> are there any other questions for Carol or Comments

<Quiltfan> yes   1

<auntie-em> !just one

<Linda> can't you just spritz the little pieces of paper w/water and it will come out?

<Carol> Linda, I don't ever spritz....too much trouble and they really don't cause a problem.

<Linda> ok ty :)

<peaches> Thanks Carol for taking time out to chat with us...maybe next time I'll be here on time!!  LOL!!!

<Carol> You are most welcome Peaches

<Quiltfan> thanks! I read about a DVD, in which book is that and is it available in europe ?

<Carol> The Carol Doak Teaches You to Paper Piece DVD is not in a book, it is a separate product and is distributed by C & T Publishing and should be available in Europe at your local quilt shop. If they don't have it, just ask them to order it. Or, if you just can't get it in Europe , you can always order from my web page.

<Quiltfan> thanks!

<Linda> is it on your site to purchase?

<Carol> Linda, yes, it and everything else I use is on my site.

<Linda> yes i have ordered many items from your site, great prices!!

<qltnfool> Thanks Carol for your time and I love your books

<Carol> You are welcome, I enjoyed chatting with you all this evening. Now, no pressure, but I want to see some paper piecing from you all.

<auntie-em> I chaired the "quilts in progress" portion of the CT Piecemakers show last April and I want you to know it was a pleasure having you be a part of it

<Carol> Well thank you Auntie...I enjoyed it myself. Lots of fun!

<tricia> Carol, you have been a great sport!!  Thank you for all the wonderful info!

<ClaudiaND> I think I WILL try PP...

<Carol> Great Claudia

<peaches> One more question if I may...Carol, I love your DVD that has tons of  intricate patterns; any new ones in the future?

<Carol> Peaches, you must me talking about the Carol Doak Designer Edition of the Foundation Factory if you are enjoying tons of intricate patterns. Hopefully, all the future books will continue to come out with their own CD of patterns.

<quiltDonalyn-FLYankee> I am going to pick a number from 1 - 27 for some door prizes
